The Martindale Test
The industry standard for ranking upholstery fabric is the Martindale Rub Test. A similar test called the Wyzenbeek Method is used most commonly in the USA. These tests are used to determine the environments that the fabrics are suitable for.
Fabrics can be separated into two major groups: domestic and commercial. There is no harm in using a higher grade fabric than what you require and commercial fabric can be used in domestic environments.
When you're selecting an upholstery fabric, durability isn't the only thing you should consider: Would you prefer natural fibers? Perhaps open or closed weave? Or ethically sourced?
